Rico Portland

Evading Insularity

The studio album, released Wednesday 25th June 2008

A relaxed start with tracks from Kaskade remixed beautifully by Adam K and Soha, Jay Lumen and Thomas Schwartz mirror the warm summer nights spent exploring far off destinations. The mix builds in energy yet does not compromise the uplifting euphoric effect that the highest quality trance delivers. Orkidea’s ‘Metaverse’ remixed by Gareth Emery is the perfect example of how exceptional attention to detail and the utmost quality can attain euphoria in the most subtle of guises. Datt and Bissen’s ‘Take Your Time’ drift you further from home, and complement seamlessly visions of the world flashing past a train window. The legendary ‘ Amsterdam ’ is given a ‘re-touch’ by the masters that are Super8 and Tab. This is the pinnacle of traveling music, whether you are listening in a departure lounge, a on a train journeying to another city, or driving in your car through the dead of night.

The instrumental masterpieces that follow from the Swede Bjorn Arkesson and the Egyptians Aly & Fila accompany the summers evenings with an uncanny perfection. A Rico Portland favourite from a few years ago fits quite un-aged alongside, from the Swiss Dave202. ‘Rain Against Her’ – just the title is enough to send shivers down your spine, let alone the magical breakdown and melody. The mix comes to a close with another revitalised classic from Masters and Nickson. Daniel Kandi is on remix duty to present the 2008 version of ‘Out There [5th Dimension]’. What a way to end a mix more fittingly than with the magnificent vocals of Justine Suissa. I hope you enjoyed your journey as much as I did.

Rated 4 out of 5

The idea behind Evading Insularity was to provide Rico with a personal mix of a few of his favourite records of late May/Early June to accompany him on a trip throughout Europe in July. After recording the mix and playing it back to friends, it received such a positive reaction that we just had to publish it on the website.
