In Search of Sunrise Vol.6: Ibiza

The mix album, released Monday 17th September 2007 on Black Hole

Several painstaking years passed that felt like eternity between the releases of ISOS3 and ISOS4.A time that has long since been forgotten now that Tijs Verwest appears to be releasing an ISOS every summer. That is not to say the Dutch household name fails to deliver the goods on each occasion. The latest offering is entitled 'Ibiza', and is meant to encapsulate the essence behind the beautiful 'White Isle'. Spread over 2 discs, ISOS6 embodies everything there is to offer in the stunning world of electronic dance music today.

Es Vedra - La Hacienda provides the perfect ambient opener, waves gently breaking on the shore, as Glenn Morrison - Contact from Sander Kleinenberg's LMR imprint epitomises the evening summer sun. Co-produced with Deadmau5, this track shows hints of that Deamau5 sound that is becoming ever more popular in the world of trance. A blissful transition to Andy Duguid Feat Leah - Don't Belong, a track that bounces along, yet uplifts superbly. Perfect for lounging by the beach, in the villa or cruising in the car with the windows rolled down. Leah's vocals complimented superbly by a piano that is reminiscent of a warm summer evening breeze. Solaris Heights - Vice (Sydenham Dub) is a track that passes most by, bubbling along with a deeper twist, somewhat forgettable yet nonetheless has a purpose, the piano and strings alongside a more housey beat from the label Renaissance. Proof that Tiesto seems desperate to prove, he doesn't just play trance.

Global Experience - Madras is DJ Shah under another guise, this time proving subtlety is also his forte. Punjabi vocal chants are put to great effect, with a superb summer feel provoking yet more thoughts of Ibiza bliss. The upbeat piano fuelled house track by Leonid Rudenko, aptly titled Summerfish (Scandall Sunset On Ibiza Mix) has fresh sounding take of an old skool vibe. Soaring pianos and a great melody explains why this has been on Tiesto's playlists for a while. Clear View Feat Jessica - Tell Me, a collaboration between Max Graham and Tiesto himself offers a melodic vocal track that will have the dancefloors moving and masses smiling. Despite being borderline pop, it still retains that underground dance track feel between choruses.

The Veil Kings - Searching For Truth, is a favourite of Tijs' by his old friend Roberto Scilatti who teamed up with Eliano Daviti. Gently drifting past with interludes of Spanish guitar really seem to set the Balearic feel. Ohmna - The Sun'll Shine (Sunrise Mix) is a sudden taster of something a little more progressive from the album. The rather pumping electro groove blended perfectly with tasty synths and chopped vocal shows that superb production quality comes in many original forms.

Moonbeam - See The Difference Inside (Inside Mix) switches once again back to a more full on vocal track. Not necessarily the greatest tune of all time, however an interestingly original effort, just a shame the lyrics let the rather 'pacey' tech driven bassline down. Allure Feat Julie Thompson - Somewhere Inside Of Me is a collaboration between Tiesto and Julie Thompson under Tijs' Allure guise. Somewhat different to his other Allure releases, a rather beautiful track that combines stunning emotional driven strings and vocals that deliver heart-wrenching moments in bounds. Perfect for staring out across the water, the sun setting, dreaming of what could have been.

Taxigirl - High Glow is another Tiesto production, showing as always he is busy in the studio as well as living the superstar DJ highlife. Vocals provided by Jes, this tune builds with a superb melody and touching vocals that will once again deliver goose bumps, yet without really taking off. Definitely the soundtrack to a chilled evening in the summer sun. Reeves Feat Alanah - Lonely is Mr Duguid has a second helping of vocal harmony. With vocalist Gita Bakradze once again, 'Lonely' speaks the sentiments of anyone who has ever loved and lost…superb production no.2! The final track for CD1 is Tiesto's In Search Of Sunrise Remix of Imogen Heap - Hide And Seek. Amazingly crafted, an original vocal that is used to great effect leaves the listening in awe. Epic, breathtaking, euphoric, emotional…the list goes on.

Steve Forte Rio - A New Dawn kick starts CD2 with a beautiful interlude in which to rest your eyes and open your other senses to the evening's soundtrack. Nic Chagall - What You Need (NC's In Love With Prog Mix) brings us fully into CD2, with a more proggy sound already emerging this time around. Perhaps slightly overplayed in 2007, this track with its annoying whining vocal moves by rather slowly. Marc Marzenit - Trozitos De Navidad (Primavera Remix) is a great piece of production that is uplifting despite making use of minimal sounds, and interesting quick key changes. As if it isn't noticeable already, John Dahlback - Don't Speak is the most obvious chance to realise, CD2 is nothing like CD1. Darker, deeper, progressive sounds that Tiesto can often surprise with are evident in abundance.

Deadmau5 - Arguru is the next track, from the man that is on fire in 'tranceland', and as you read this has probably created another set for dance floor devastation! First State Feat Anita Kelsey - Falling has been huge in recent months and there is no need to ask why! - A combination of euphoric vocal, summer synths and that nasty (in a good way!) riff that slams out from nowhere. First State working their' magic as usual. Jonas Steur Feat Jennifer Rene - Fall To Pieces has been a huge tune for myself and my friends, memories of Menno De Jong's set at ASOT episode 300 and good times are conjured up, as Jennifer's sublime vocal continues. An amazing track that makes CD2 for me.

JES - Imagination (Tiesto Remix) ruins for me what is possibly the most beautiful acoustic tracks in existence. Originally by Motorcycle (Gabriel & Dresden with Jes), Tiesto's remix is terrible and has no place in this mix. Tom Cloud - Mercury Room is a rather murky, mysterious, building track that works well at changing the mood. Straight away the previous disaster seems far away, and that warm evening cruising returns. Marcus Schossow - Chase My Rabbit is an awesomely original sounding bouncy tune from one of the most talented names in dance music at the moment.

Maor Levi - Reflect features potentially the greatest melody and vocal of any track on this compilation. An extremely trancey yet mature melody is greeted by vocals that are sampled and chopped to perfection that oozes summer euphoria. The guitar sample adds to the perfection. To this day I have not heard a Maor Levi track that is below superb! Progression - Different Day, Different Light brings us rather unspectacularly to a Tiesto production, Jedidja - Dancing Water. A fact I had to add to this review, Jedidja is Hebrew for 'loved by God', Tijs and his modesty! Still though, a beautifully uplifting tune with strings and melodies that some up ISOS6 extremely well. D'Alt Vila - Breathing by Roberto Scilatti and Eliano Daviti is the outro for 'Dancing Water', and the outro for that perfect summer evening.

Some knock Tiesto for playing commercial nonsense, some love him for that very fact. It is hard to deny that the Dutchman has come up trumps here, showcasing some superb talent in dance music. And that is just it, 'dance music' as opposed to Trance. We see a beautiful collection of dance tunes, not necessarily fit for the peak time dance floor at 3am, but perhaps more at home by the pool, on the sun lounger. Therefore, Tijs has captured that Ibiza feel perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5

Albeit with a few hiccups along the way, this compilation features tracks that made my summer, intertwined with some interesting new sounds that definitely take dance music in a positive step forwards, not backwards. Highly recommended, all you need now is to go pick up your friends, find the sun, sea, and sand...and enjoy the good times.
